Dharmesh Sheth, a Skysport journalist, has ‘information’ on Tottenham’s chances of re-hiring former manager Mauricio Pochettino.
Dharmesh Sheth of Sky Sports has provided an update on Tottenham Hotspur’s chances of re-hiring former manager Mauricio Pochettino.
Even before the club mutually agreed to part ways with Antonio Conte earlier this week, the Argentine was heavily linked with a return to Spurs. The Premier League’s top four contenders are thought to be interested in reuniting with Pochettino, nearly four years after he was fired by chairman Daniel Levy.
Indeed, the former PSG manager is thought to be one of the leading candidates to take over at Tottenham, alongside Julian Nagelsmann, who was recently fired by Bayern Munich, and ex-Spain coach Luis Enrique.
These are just the unemployed candidates, and reports suggest that the north Londoners may also pursue former Real Madrid head coach Zinedine Zidane. Pochettino, on the other hand, stands out as a very interesting link given his affinity for the club and popularity among Spurs fans.
Sections of the Lilywhites fan base have been seen singing his name in support of Pochettino’s sensational return to Tottenham, with Sky journalist Dharmesh Sheth now sharing what he knows about the situation. Sheth believes the 51-year-old will wait until the summer to make a decision, especially since Real Madrid has been mentioned.
He stated to GiveMeSport:
“Pochettino has previously been approached by Real Madrid, once while with Tottenham and once while with Paris-Saint-Germain.”
“But, because he was under contract at both clubs, he couldn’t even speak to Real Madrid and accept the job.
“This time, he is not working, which is probably why he wants to take his time. He’s taken his time returning to football after losing his job at PSG.
“I wonder if he’ll wait until the summer – because that’s what we’re hearing now – to see if it’s not just Tottenham who are interested in him, and whether Real Madrid will come back in.”
Former Spurs players have dubbed Pochettino a ‘genius,’ and it is no secret that he is a popular figure in north London, especially after working on a shoestring budget and leading them to the Champions League final in 2019.
The former Southampton manager also has a league title from his time at PSG, which could help him grow as a coach.
While there may be some reservations about going backwards, there are few other managers in the world who know Spurs as well as Pochettino, and his status as a free agent makes this move very appealing to Levy.
