Spurs newcomer is already forming exciting partnership with Maddison – says Postecoglou

Ange Postecoglou was pleased with the way that James Maddison and Wilson Odobert combined on the left against Everton on Saturday.

Postecoglou handed Odobert his debut

Postecoglou’s team selection against the Toffees, surprised a few people, with the Australian opting to start Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski in the middle of the park alongside Yves Bissouma.

That means that the Englishman and the Swede occupied the half-spaces on the left and the right respectively.

Postecoglou also decided to hand Odobert a start against the Toffees and the winger had an extremely promising debut, showcasing his ability to carry the ball and commit defenders.

Even though the teenager has only been training with his teammates for a week, he already appeared to have a good understanding with Maddison and Destiny Udogie, with the trio combining to cause all sorts of problems to Sean Dyche’s men on their right.

Postecoglou praised Maddsion for some of the runs he made and the discipline he showed in the middle of the park.

When asked about the attacking midfielder’s display, the Tottenham boss told Football.London: “Yeah, I thought Madders was really good and again, really disciplined. It’s not an easy game when you play against a team like Everton because you know there’s not gonna be a hell of a lot of space in the front third.

“But you’ve also got to work defensively for second balls. I thought he was really good at doing that for us. He kind of mopped up a few times when they’ve gone long and, and kept the ball for us.

“He had a really good synergy with Wilson early on, they worked really well together. And then he made some great runs.”

Spurs Web Opinion

This tactic of playing two attack-minded midfielders in the middle of the park is not something we saw from Ange last season.

It is a smart tactic against low-blocks at home and evidence that the Australian is indeed flexible enough to adapt.
