Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou praised summer signing James Maddison after his performance against Shakhtar Donetsk yesterday.
Spurs defeated Ukrainian giants 5-1 in North London on Sunday, with Harry Kane stealing the show.
After a weekend of speculation about his future, the 29-year-old put on a finishing clinic for Tottenham, scoring four goals.
The England captain combined particularly effectively with his new teammate Maddison, with the former Leicester City star providing a precise cross to set up his second goal of the afternoon.
Maddison’s performance in the middle of the park also impressed Postecoglou.
Maddison wowed Postecoglou.
Postecoglou singled out Maddison for praise after yesterday’s friendly, speaking to Spurs Play about his tremendous work rate off the ball.
“I thought Madders, I mean, his football was unbelievable, but I thought his pressing was really good in the second half and that set the tone for us,” stated Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino.
“When you see your attacking players doing those things, it inspires everyone else to work hard, and that’s what I look for.”
Maddison worked well in midfield yesterday, setting up Kane for his second goal of the game after winning a penalty in the first half.
The 26-year-old moved to North London in June and perhaps put up his best performance to date yesterday.
He combined superb off-the-ball work with some much-needed inventiveness, which Spurs have lacked outside of Kane in recent years.
Tottenham fans will definitely be delighted about the next season, and Maddison is poised to make a significant contribution in North London.
They will be hoping that the England star can link up with Kane this season, as Spurs are fighting to keep their all-time leading goalscorer.
