Tottenham have discussed bringing Levi Colwill from Chelsea this summer.
That is according to Ben Jacobs, who was speaking on Last Word on Spurs regarding Tottenham’s summer defensive reinforcement plans.
Ange Postecoglou, according to Jacobs, is looking to add some Premier League-proven experience to his backline, and Colwill is one player that has been discussed at Spurs.
Brighton recently made a £40 million approach for Colwill, but Chelsea is determined to keep the midfielder. Of course, everything could change if Tottenham enters the competition aggressively.
Jacobs revealed his knowledge of the Chelsea defender and Spurs.
“Watch out for Premier League defenders; I’d add another name, Levi Colwill, even though I don’t think he’ll be available; Tottenham is one of the clubs interested in Colwill.” To avoid being misquoted, I mean they have discussed him internally and have a high regard for the player, not that they have moved. “They haven’t moved because, like Brighton, they’re getting the same signals from Chelsea, which is that the player isn’t for sale,” Jacobs explained.
Colwill appears to be a very gifted player, but £40 million for someone who has played fewer than 20 Premier League games is exorbitant.
Of course, the aim in the transfer market is to sign these elite players early on, but for £40 million, you could easily find someone more established who can do a comparable job.
It is difficult to assess. On the one hand, £40 million may be a steal if Colwill lives up to his promise, but he’s rarely played at this level.
Before making a decision on this one, the Spurs must continue their internal conversations.
