Micky Van de Ven is on his way to Tottenham.
On Wednesday afternoon, Fabrizio Romano stated that an agreement was close between all parties and that the ‘outstanding’ defender may join Spurs very soon.
Van de Ven to Tottenham is an intriguing move, but many were left wondering how much Spurs would pay for the Dutch defender after hearing this rumor.
Valuations of £30 million and £35 million have lately been announced, but it appears that the north London club spent considerably more for Van de Ven.
Indeed, according to Alfredo Pedulla, the fee Tottenham have agreed to pay for the young defender is €50m (£43m).
Of course, supply and demand dictate the prices of everything in this transfer window, but it has to be said that £43m is a lot of money for a centre-half who finished in mid-table in the Bundesliga last season.
Nobody can argue that Van de Ven has a lot going for him, but at £43 million, you’d want an established top-level centre-back, not someone who is still establishing their mark.
Every young player has to start somewhere, and we can’t fault Spurs for taking a chance on a kid with a very high ceiling, but after years of hearing how much of a great negotiator Daniel Levy is, this has to be considered an overpay.
Van de Ven might immediately show that he is worth the money if he hits the ground running in the Premier League, but with just two weeks until the season begins, that is unlikely.
