Tottenham Hotspur edge Newcastle United after hot battle to sign £50m PL midfield wizard

James Maddison of Leicester City would have a ‘greater impact’ at Tottenham Hotspur than he would at Newcastle United.

According to former Arsenal midfielder Ray Parlour, Tottenham are ‘crying out’ for a player like Maddison.
Newcastle’s stronger midfield, according to Parlour, makes signing Maddison less necessary. He told talkSPORT earlier this week: “Newcastle have more players in that position, if I’m being honest.”However, [Spurs] are desperate for an offensive midfielder. They’ve got [Pierre-Emile] Hojbjerg and [Oliver] Skipp. They are both excellent players and diligent workers.

“However, they desperately need a ball player.” I believe Maddison would have a greater impact at Spurs than at Newcastle.

“Newcastle’s midfield is far superior. The Spurs are desperate for a player like Maddison.”

Spurs and Newcastle are both said to be interested in the 26-year-old, who is presently on international duty with England. Following Leicester’s relegation from the Premier League, Maddison is expected to leave this summer.

The Foxes were relegated to the Championship, but Maddison still managed 10 goals and nine assists in 2022-23.

Newcastle is likely to make a third bid for Maddison this summer after Leicester rejected two. However, with only a year left on his deal, the Magpies would be hesitant to pay more than £50 million.

Eddie Howe’s team also has an unusual advantage over Spurs in that they will be able to offer Champions League play next season, whilst the North London club will be out of Europe entirely.

Despite Parlour’s sentiments, Newcastle need midfield reinforcements this summer after failing to replace the departing Jonjo Shelvey in January. Howe is said to be looking for at least two midfielders, with Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton, Sean Longstaff, and Joe Willock the only known senior midfielders in the squad.

Elliot Anderson, 20, is also capable of playing in an offensive midfield role but has only started three Premier League games. Newcastle’s midfield predicament was so severe that 17-year-old Lewis Miley was named to the bench for the final several games of the 2022-23 season and even got on the play against Chelsea on the final day.
