According to rumours, Tottenham Hotspur have agreed to terms with Galatasaray defender Victor Nelsson.
Nelsson is a Danish international who joined the Nef Stadium from FC Copenhagen in August 2021 and has since made 78 appearances, 31 of which have been starts this season from 33 Super Lig games.
Clement Lenglet’s season-long loan from Barcelona expires at the end of the season, so if he does not make the move permanent, Ryan Mason’s successor may be looking for a new centre-back, and the 24-year-old appears to have been identified as an ideal target in N17.
Tottenham “came to Galatasaray with a €25m (£21m) offer,” according to T24 (via Sport Witness), with the Turkish club now “working” on sanctioning his sale. Erden Timur, the club’s president, “made a trip” to London to have “transfer talks” with many clubs, including Spurs, and despite not wanting to let him go, they have “softened their stance” as a result of his “desire to leave.”
The story goes on to say that Spurs executives met with the Denmark international and “reached an agreement,” presumably on personal terms.
Nelsson was labeled a “monster” by football talent scout Jacek Kulig prior to joining Galatasaray, and considering the exceptionally high standard of his performances that he’s sustained into this season, Tottenham might be recruiting a superb centre-back should this deal be concluded.
According to WhoScored, the World Cup player presently averages 3.4 clearances and 3.1 aerial wins per league game, indicating that he can contribute to his team’s efforts at both ends of the field.
Nelsson, who can play slightly higher up in defensive and central midfield in addition to his natural position in the backline, has one goal and one assist this season across all competitions and can be useful in set pieces and long balls in the final third.
Whether Tottenham’s new permanent manager will have the same targets in mind that Daniel Levy is highlighting now remains to be seen, but Nelsson could be an impressive signing regardless of who takes over in the capital ahead of the 2023/24 season.
