The exciting Welshman could be the latest high-profile individual to swap Nottingham for north London.
Tottenham Hotspur are apparently among the clubs keeping an eye on Nottingham Forest prodigy Brennan Johnson, who had a promising debut season in the Premier League last time out.
The Lilywhites are believed to be “interested” in signing the 5 foot 10 speedster this summer, according to The Athletic’s Paul Taylor, amid allegations that Forest have rejected a proposal from top-flight rivals Brentford for the 22-year-old.
“Another bid rejected from Brentford, other clubs – including Spurs – still interested but #NFFC value him at £50m,” the transfer insider stated on Twitter. Informal talks have taken place with Steve Cooper about Brennan Johnson’s future, and he remains an important presence at the CG.”
Taylor continues in his story for The Athletic that, despite the Bees are the only club to have made a’significant bid’ for the Nottingham native, Spurs are’monitoring Johnson’s situation attentively’.
While that reported £50m price tag may appear rather steep for a player who has just one season under his belt in the top flight, the one-time Lincoln City loanee certainly made his mark as Steve Cooper’s men successfully staved off relegation, scoring eight goals and providing three assists in 38 league outings.
The £30k-per-week sensation, dubbed “a real handful” by journalist Antonio Mango, was a devastating weapon in his attacking role on the flanks or through the middle, ranking among the top 12% of his fellow forwards in Europe’s top five leagues for progressive carries as an indication of his dynamic threat.
Ange Postecoglou and co. being able to entice Johnson away from his current club could prove to be a good, long-term investment, with the Forest ace having also demonstrated his talent the year before, scoring 26 goals in the second division as part of his side’s victorious promotion campaign.
The expectation is that the 19-cap international can duplicate the success of Teddy Sheringham, another promising forward who moved from the City Ground to N17.
Spurs signed the now-retired striker in 1992, just before the start of the inaugural Premier League season, for a relatively large sum of £2.1 million.
After finishing the 1992/23 season as the league’s top scorer with 22 goals, the ex-England international made an immediate impression in his new surroundings, scoring 14 goals in all during his year-long tenure with the Garibaldi.
As it turned out, the Highams Park-born striker would go on to score 54 more league goals over the next four seasons before being signed by Manchester United ahead of the 1997/98 season.
following returning to White Hart Lane in 2001 following a glittering, trophy-laden tenure at Old Trafford, the seasoned striker would eventually score over 100 goals in all competitions during his two stays at the club, proving value for money.
With Sheringham’s first spell at Spurs, in especially, being so successful after leaving Nottingham, young Johnson may be able to follow in his footsteps in the near future.
