John Wenham has accused the Argentinian press of trying to push Tottenham defender Cristian Romero out of the club.
The owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose isn’t surprised by recent speculation surrounding the 26-year-old.
As reported by Fabrizio Romano via X (9 October), Romero does not have a £54million release clause in his Tottenham contract despite reports from Argentina.
And Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – doesn’t think Spurs would have ever agreed to such terms.
“I’m not surprised at all by these reports,” Wenham said.
“In Argentina, they value Romero really highly. Therefore, when they see he isn’t winning anything with Tottenham, they probably think why is he there?
“As a result, I think they’re doing their bit to try and push him toward those bigger clubs. However, there is absolutely zero chance he has a £54million release clause considering what we paid to sign him.
Cristian Romero to leave Tottenham?
Romero hasn’t been at his best this season, with his form a particular concern for Wenham. However, despite his subpar performances on the pitch, speculation continues to swirl around his future.
While reports of a £54million release clause might be wide of the mark, with a figure closer to £75million being speculated, it doesn’t mean teams won’t come in with big-money offers. Ange Postecoglou will no doubt be desperate to keep hold of the defender.
Therefore, Spurs must do everything they can to convince Romero that North London is the place to be. Otherwise, things could get messy next summer.
Especially if the Argentinian media are doing their bit to secure him that big-money move.
