Tottenham are on the verge of completing two more summer signings, with defender Micky van de Ven and striker Alejo Veliz both scheduled for medicals today.
Under-21 Dutch center-half Van de Ven was at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium yesterday to see his new team defeat Shakhtar Donetsk 5-1 in a friendly for Ukrainian fans. He is poised to join from Wolfsburg for around £43 million, with head coach Ange Postecoglou expecting he will be the first of two new arrivals at centre-half.
“There’s no doubt we need some bolstering in that area,” Postecoglou stated yesterday. “We’re looking for players who can play the type of football we want to play.” Hopefully, we’ll have one or two done in the next few days to help us out.”
Spurs agreed a price of around £13 million with Rosario Central for highly-rated forward Veliz, who is also set to sign a long-term contract. Despite the Argentine club’s request for him to return on loan, the 19-year-old Argentina youth international will remain at Spurs this season.
Postecoglou will have a roster of more than 35 senior players after their arrivals, but Spurs intend to speed outgoings this week. Hugo Lloris, Tanguy Ndombele, Joe Rodon, and Djed Spence are all on the transfer list after being left out of the team to face Shakhtar, while Davinson Sanchez and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg are among others who may depart for the appropriate price.
“I don’t have a fixed number [of players] in my head, but it’s fair to say our squad is too big at the moment,” Postecoglou said. “There are obviously guys who will look for other opportunities.”
“I have nothing to do with it.” I’ll deal with what’s in front of me, and I believe we’ll see some progress in the next weeks. We obviously have some time before the transfer window closes.”
Harry Kane scored four goals yesterday, but his future remains uncertain, with Bayern Munich still hoping to sign the England captain and waiting for Spurs to respond to their latest approach.
Postecoglou responded to Bayern’s public pursuit of Kane by saying, “Right now, he is a contracted player of our club.” I wouldn’t discuss contracted players at other teams, but I’m not at Bayern, so they can do anything they want.”
