Sporting CP is considering selling the midfielder this summer.
According to a recent source, Tottenham Hotspur will make an official offer for Sporting CP midfielder Manuel Ugarte during the summer transfer window.
Will Manuel Ugarte join Tottenham this summer?
Tottenham had been interested in Ugarte for some time, and it was reported in September that they made contact with Sporting about signing the midfielder, while Leicester City, Paris Saint-Germain, and Atletico Madrid were also mentioned as prospective suitors.
According to journalist Pete O’Rourke, Aston Villa have lately joined the fight for the 21-year-old’s signature, while Newcastle United, Leeds United, and Wolverhampton Wanderers are also interested.
As a result, winning the race for the Uruguayan in the summer may be difficult, especially if Newcastle pip Spurs to fourth place, although he remains a goal, according to a recent Record article. (Image courtesy of Sport Witness)
Spurs are expected to make an official bid for the defensive midfielder after promising to do so during the summer transfer window, and Sporting are now thought to be exploring a sale.
The Portuguese club needs to generate finances before bringing in new signings, and the teenager has a release clause of €60 million (£53 million), making him one of their most valuable assets.
Sporting would prefer to avoid a similar situation in the summer after dealing with Tottenham in the negotiations for Pedro Porro, which carried on throughout the entire January window.
The Uruguayan is flourishing in the Portuguese league, particularly on defense, where he ranks in the 99th percentile for tackles completed per 90 minutes over the last year, as well as the 99th percentile for pass completion rate.
The maestro, dubbed a “animal” by the media, was outstanding for Sporting in their Europa League victory against Arsenal last month, winning a total of 13 ground duels, seven more than any of his colleagues, while also executing four successful dribbles.
A performance like that against the Premier League leaders demonstrates that the eight-time Uruguay international is more than ready to make the move up to the English top division, and Spurs should make a bid this summer.
Given his age, Ugarte has the potential to rule the Tottenham midfield for the next decade, and while he is now turning in top-tier performances, he will only get better.
