Tottenham Hotspur have the upper hand in the fight for the £60 million star over David Beckham.
Tottenham Hotspur have the upper hand in the fight to sign Leicester City star James Maddison, according to transfer source Dean Jones.
Newcastle United are also rumored to be interested in the offensive midfielder, but Jones claims Spurs are working on a deal to sign him and that he is a great player.
Jones recently told GIVEMESPORT that the club’s pursuit of Maddison has pleased incoming Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou.
However, the former Celtic manager will be aware that it is too soon to rejoice, with Newcastle also showing an interest in the Leicester playmaker.
The Magpies want to recruit Maddison this summer, according to various sources, including The Northern Echo.
According to Football Insider, it could cost £60 million to get the Englishman out of the King Power Stadium.
While Newcastle finished higher than Tottenham last season and qualified for the Champions League, Jones believes Tottenham has the upper hand in the fight to capture Maddison.
“I mean, I actually do give Tottenham the edge here,” the journalist told GIVEMESPORT. They’ve got pretty good communication channels open on this one, and they’re dialing in on how a deal can open up in a way that works for everyone.
It is not the most crucial position for Tottenham to resolve. We know that they need defenders and a goalie, but they prefer James Maddison.”
Maddison poses a significant threat in the final third. Despite playing in a mediocre Leicester side, the England international scored 10 goals and supplied nine assists in the Premier League last season (via Transfermarkt).
He’s particularly dangerous from set pieces, drawing similarities to Three Lions star David Beckham.
“He reminds me of David Beckham,” Tony Cottee, a former Leicester City striker, told The Football Show in 2018. “Watching him play, he runs like Beckham and takes free kicks like Beckham.” He has excellent vision and is an excellent passer of the ball.”
Tottenham’s priority, as Jones noted, should probably be elsewhere right now, such as at the back. Hugo Lloris, for example, has indicated his desire to leave the club this summer.
However, Maddison is just too fantastic an opportunity to pass up. They should surely bring him to Hotspur Way if they can.
