Tottenham switch all attention to sign top 57-cap defender who is to level Circus club this summer

Gabby Agbonlahor believes Harry Maguire should quit Manchester United’s ‘circus’ and join Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur this summer.

The 30-year-old was stripped of the captain’s armband at Manchester United over the weekend, with Erik ten Hag stating unequivocally that the club’s big-money defender has no future at Old Trafford.

Former Aston Villa striker Agonlahor criticized Harry Maguire’s treatment as he encouraged him to go by naming Tottenham as a possible destination and how he’starts’ for the London club on talkSPORT Breakfast (18/07/23 at 6:30 a.m.).

Spurs are on the lookout for centre-backs this summer following a season of tragedy after disaster.

Goals were not an issue for the team last season, even with Son Heung-min having a bad season, but the defense was all over the place and needs to be revamped.

For Agonlahor, he thinks that Postecoglou probably needs ‘four centre-halves’ ahead of the new season, as he backed Maguire to be one of those names.

“Harry Maguire, for me, is a top centre-half,” said Agbonlahor. “I don’t like the way he gets treated by Manchester United fans and sheep on social media – if I am him, then I am leaving the circus.

“He starts in that Spurs defence – There are a lot of teams that are sorted, centre-back wise. Liverpool with Konate, Virgil van Dijk, Matip and Gomez. For teams that aren’t sorted with centre-halves, I think he will play. Spurs, for instance, they probably need four centre-halves.”

Would Maguire be a good fit for Postecoglou’s style?

The answer is most likely no, because the former Celtic manager wants his backline, especially the goalie, to be brave on the ball and play in a style that opens the door to great risk.

Maguire, as he has demonstrated with England, need a team and style that sits back, absorbs pressure, and then attacks opponents on the counter.

Spurs tried and failed to sign Antonio Conte last season, so a move for the 57-cap England international would be surprising.
