According to the daily tabloid newspaper, Spurs monitored the 28-year-old many times at the end of last season. He is on the club’s radar as they want to reinforce their midfield.
Ward-Prowse is also garnering interest from a number of clubs, notably West Ham, who had a £25 million deal rejected by Southampton last week. The Saints are asking £40 million for their long-serving captain, who is eager to return to the Premier League.
Since making his formal debut for the club at the age of 16 in the League Cup against Crystal Palace, the England international has been a loyal servant at St Mary’s Stadium. He has since made over 400 appearances for Southampton, scoring 55 goals and providing 54 assists in all competitions.
He was one of the Saints’ most consistent performances last season when they were relegated from the Premier League. The all-around midfielder appeared in 41 games and contributed 12 goals in the process.
Ward-Prowse has been linked with a move away from Southampton following their relegation, but the South Coast club are unwilling to sell on the cheap and are standing fast on their asking price.
Hijacking maneuver
The Daily Star reports that Tottenham are preparing to make their own move for Ward-Prowse and are willing to pay significantly closer to Southampton’s £40m value if a deal can be completed soon.
Tottenham are interested in selling Tanguy Ndombele, Giovani Lo Celso, and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, who is reportedly close to joining Atletico Madrid for more than £25 million.
Ndombele is also expected to complete his £11 million move to Galatasaray, while Aston Villa are interested in acquiring Lo Celso, who impressed for Spurs during pre-season.
Ange Postecoglou has already signed James Maddison, but the former Celtic manager is still looking for at least two midfielders, with Ward-Prowse emerging as a strong priority.
