Tottenham will sign Harry Winks for £10 million as they look to strengthen their defense.
James Maddison will have a medical at Tottenham today before completing a £40 million move from Leicester City, with Harry Winks following in a separate transaction.
Maddison, 26, arrived in London on Tuesday from Ibiza and has already accepted personal terms on a long-term contract with Spurs, a huge coup for new head coach Ange Postecoglou.
Winks, who came through Tottenham’s youth system and has made 128 appearances for the club in all competitions, is closing in on a permanent move to Leicester City after spending last season on loan at Italian club Sampdoria for a cost of £10 million.
Maddison will add spark and originality to a Spurs attack that already includes Harry Kane, Heung-min Son, Richarlison, and Dejan Kulusevski, but his future remains uncertain following a £60 million approach from Bayern Munich.
Spurs insist they do not want to sell Kane, who is thought to be interested in joining the perennial Bundesliga winners, but they would have to consider a massive offer of £100 million or more for the 29-year-old, who is in the final year of his contract.
Newcastle were also interested in Maddison, who had a year left on his Leicester contract, but dropped their pursuit after acquiring AC Milan’s Sandro Tonali, allowing Spurs to knock down the Foxes’ £50 million asking price following negotiations this week.
Spurs have been interested in Maddison since he was at Coventry but missed out on signing him in 2016, when he joined Norwich, then again two years later, when he went to the King Power Stadium in a £20 million deal.
At Leicester, he has established himself as one of the Premier League’s most creative players, finishing the season with 10 goals and nine assists despite the Foxes’ relegation.
His form earned him an unexpected call-up to Gareth Southgate’s World Cup team, although he did not play in Qatar due to injury and won his third England cap this month in Malta.
He has made 203 appearances for Leicester in all competitions, helping them win the FA Cup in 2021 and scoring 43 League goals – one per 3.7 games.
Postecoglou has preferred a 4-3-3 formation, and Maddison will most likely start as one of his No. 8s in midfield but could possibly play on either side of the front three.
Maddison is Spurs’ second new acquisition of the summer, following the £17.2 million signing of goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario on a five-year contract, while Kulusevski’s loan move from Juventus has been extended.
They are looking for a center-back, with talks with Bayer Leverkusen’s Edmond Tapsoba ongoing and interest in re-signing Clement Lenglet, who spent last season on loan from Barcelona.
