Romaine Mundle, a Tottenham Hotspur player, is leaving the club but looks to be having second thoughts about a move to Standard Liege.
According to Le Soir, Standard’s aspirations of bringing the young winger to Belgium have met an unexpected snag at the eleventh hour.
Romaine Mundle, 20, will be a free agent after declining a contract deal with Tottenham Hotspur.
The winger appeared to be on the verge of joining Standard Liege alongside Everton midfielder Isaac Price, having attended the club’s latest Jupiler League match against KV Westerlo at the Maurice Dufrasne Stadium.
However, late Eredivisie involvement is complicating matters.
Is Romaine Mundle on his way out of Tottenham for Holland?
FC Utrecht has now made an offer to Mundle. And, as Le Soir points out, he is currently considering relocating to the Netherlands.
This season, Utrecht finished seventh in the Dutch top division, guaranteeing qualification for the European play-offs. With a number of players out of contract, Michael Silberbauer’s team is looking for attacking reinforcements. Furthermore, Manchester United and Rangers are interested in both Taylor Booth and Anastosios Douvikas, the Eredivisie’s joint-top scorer.
Mundle, meanwhile, might follow in the footsteps of another former Spurs player if he transfers to Utrecht.
Noni Madueke was signed by PSV Eindhoven when he decided to leave the North London nest, and the England U21 international earned a £29 million move to Chelsea following some genuinely brilliant exploits in red and white stripes.
“Not everyone in England could believe Noni was going to play for us, but it happened anyway,” remarked Rini di Groot, PSV’s head of junior scouting, back in 2020.
“We all noticed Noni’s talent right away.” (Madueke and his father) were invited to watch our training in Eindhoven.
“His father was genuinely convinced that his son would have a lower chance of playing in the Premier League.” As a result, his development may be hampered. That is what happens to young people in England.”
Mundle might understand how Madueke felt. Mundle did not make a single first-team appearance for Spurs in 2022/23, despite the poor play of Richarlison, Dejan Kulusevski, and Heung-Min Son.
