James Maddison destined to step up for Ange Postecoglou ahead of Tottenham v Brentford
Tottenham fans will be quick to admit James Maddison has been below his usual standards at the start of the 2024/25 Premier League season.
The 27-year-old has experienced a tough few months at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, not least being dropped from the England squad ahead of the European Championships in Germany.
While he has assisted goals against Leicester City and Everton in the opening four games of this season, that makes it just four goal contributions in his last 15 Premier League appearances.
With the attacking outlets currently at Ange Postecoglou’s disposal, Spurs fans would expect Maddison to be among the goals far more often, and Brentford represents the perfect opportunity to get back to his old ways.
In 10 meetings against the Bees, the midfielder has been on the losing side on just one occasion, winning six and drawing three, notching four goals and five assists [Transfermarkt].
James Maddison to spark Tottenham season into life v Brentford
While the 27-year-old, so far, has improved upon his 59 per cent shot accuracy from last season, finding the target with 75 per cent of his efforts, he has not hit the back of the net since March [FotMob].
Of course, his 94 per cent passing accuracy against Arsenal in the North London Derby came as no surprise, and neither did his two chances created, as per FotMob, but it was not enough to help his team to victory.
He still ranks in the top 95 percentile for assists among attacking midfielders and wingers in Europe’s top five leagues, but his number of goals leaves a lot to be desired, ranking in the bottom 10 percentile for non-penalty goals [FBref].
Thomas Frank’s side are currently two points above the Lilywhites in the Premier League, so claiming all three points on Saturday is crucial, and Maddison can be the key to victory as proven before.
