According to journalist Paul Brown, Tottenham Hotspur players would “love” for the club to appoint Mauricio Pochettino as their new manager.
Following his departure from Bayern Munich, it has now been reported that Julian Nagelsmann is one of the frontrunners for the Tottenham Hotspur job, but he is not the only candidate being considered by the board. The same report claims Luis Enrique and Pochettino are both options for chairman Daniel Levy, although the club’s hierarchy are said to be split on whether to sanction the latter manager’s return.
Pochettino was said to be willing to take over immediately, but the club now appears to be taking a more cautious approach, with Cristian Stellini potentially taking over for the remainder of the season, supported by Ryan Mason. While the Spurs board is still debating whether to bring back their former manager, Brown recently told GiveMeSport that he still has many fans at the club.
According to the reporter: “Many managers, I believe, will be interested in the Spurs job. I believe a few have already spoken up. Pochettino is an intriguing man. I believe there are members of the club, including those in the dressing room, who would welcome his return.”
Despite failing to win any trophies during the Argentine’s previous tenure, Tottenham finished in the top four in four consecutive seasons, a significant improvement over the days of Tim Sherwood and Andre Villas-Boas. After being fired by Tottenham in November 2019, the “brilliant” 51-year-old has since added to his trophy collection, albeit in a much less competitive league, winning three trophies, including a league title, during his time with Paris Saint-Germain.
With the Independent reporting that the Tottenham dressing room is in disarray as a result of Conte’s recent comments, the board may need to appoint someone who can rally both the players and the fans.
A major advantage of appointing Pochettino is that Harry Kane is reportedly willing to sign a new contract, and while leading Spurs to another Champions League final will be a difficult task for the manager, he is a proven manager at Premier League level, having overseen 293 matches in his previous stint.
