Despite multiple fresh injuries, Nebraska football looks forward to a pivotal divisional match.
Matt Rhule, the head coach, began his weekly press conference on Monday with some news that has been repeated far too often this season.
Due to injuries, two linemen will miss the entire season, making four important offensive players unavailable.
Due to their injuries, junior offensive linemen Turner Corcoran (foot) and Ethan Piper (knee) will miss the rest of the season and will need surgery. Due to an unidentified injury, senior lineman Nouredin Nouili will also miss several weeks of work. The senior Billy Kemp IV’s multiple-week absence due to an MCL sprain further reduced the depth in the receiver room.
Since the Huskers have started every game with the same starting lineup thus far, the hits to the offensive line are novel. Rhule is confident in the new faces, having now eliminated three of the five.
“I felt a lot of guys stepped up when their number was called in the last game,” Rhule remarked. “I anticipate that they will step up and that our seasoned players will play the best football possible.”
Redshirt freshman Justin Evans-Jenkins, as well as sophomores Henry Lutovsky and Teddy Prochazka, cover the line. Both Lutovsky and Prochazka have starting experience; however, during the past month, Prochazka has participated more in the offense as he heals from a knee injury, playing in extra blocker sets.
Rhule declared, “[Prochazka] can definitely play at a super high level.” “He’s ready to go; he’s at full speed now that his knee is healthy.”
For the first time in his career, Evans-Jenkins saw a lot of action against Northwestern, filling in at center and guard when junior Ben Scott was injured. Regarding his performance on Saturday, Rhule “can’t say enough” and is optimistic that he will keep the momentum going.
Due to Kemp IV’s injury, Nebraska will be without a receiver, which forces freshman Jaidyn Doss to take center stage as the starting slot receiver. Though Doss has already played in two games, Rhule raised the possibility that his redshirt would be wasted. Nevertheless, Doss will be an important component of the offense without Kemp IV, so Rhule isn’t concerned about it.
The Huskers must concentrate on a crucial game against Purdue, who is coming off a bye, on Saturday. They cannot afford to linger on the losses to their offense. Hudson Card, the junior quarterback leading the Boilermakers, “presents a whole unique challenge” for the Nebraska defense, according to Rhule.
Rhule praised Card’s athleticism. We’ve been running these guys down and letting them out of the pocket. [Card] is not being run down by you. Thus, this week we have to try some new things.
The Blackshirts, who have pitched two outstanding games in a row, have been outstanding all season. Rhule thinks that because of the number of injuries on offense this week, “the defense will have to do more.”
Rhule refers to Ryan Walters, the head coach of Purdue University, as a “defensive mastermind,” so the Huskers’ offense will need to provide a better showing on Saturday. The temporary offensive line will not have it easy against the Boilermakers’ pass rush. This all boils down to preventing turnovers, as demonstrated by Heinrich Haarberg, the sophomore quarterback, who threw two interceptions during the game.
According to Rhule, “We’re going to have to mature a little bit offensively in terms of handling the ball and making the plays that are available to us.” “The young players on offense can accomplish that because the young players on defense are accomplishing that.”
Rhule is confident that the inexperienced players and the recent additions will meet the challenges ahead and secure a possible bowl bid.
“They’ve won four of the last five, so it hasn’t been perfect,” Rhule remarked. “They stand up for Nebraska University.”
