Coach jimmy smith resigns running backs reportedly to take job at TCU

Arkansas running backs coach Jimmy Smith is reportedly resigning and taking a job at TCU.

Jimmy Smith, the University of Arkansas’ running backs coach, resigned Friday, an Arkansas spokesperson confirmed. TCU is reportedly pursuing Smith for the same position, according to 247Sports. The news came just hours after Smith attended Arkansas’ second spring practice.

Smith has ties to TCU through offensive coordinator Kendall Briles, who was on Razorbacks coach Sam Pittman’s staff for three seasons from 2020-22. The Horned Frogs are searching for a replacement for Anthony Jones, who left for the same position at Southern California earlier this week.

The 2024 season would have been Smith’s fifth season at the University of Arkansas, where he was one of two assistants remaining on Pittman’s former staff. The other is special teams coordinator Scott Fountain.

Raheim “Rocket” Sanders, currently at South Carolina, is the most important Arkansas running back to play under Coach Smith. Sanders totaled 2,230 yards in three seasons at the University of Arkansas. His sophomore season in 2022 was a career best, as he rushed for 1,443 yards, leading the Razorbacks to the 10th season in program history with over 3,000 yards. Smith has been an integral part of Arkansas’ recruiting efforts at Georgia, having coached to a state championship at Cedar Grove High School before becoming Georgia State’s running backs coach in 2019 and starting in 2020. He joined Pittman at the University of Arkansas.

Smith, who was promoted to assistant head coach before last season, earned $360,000 a year at Arkansas.
