UW women’s basketball team defeats Georgetown to win Big East Tournament

The UW women’s basketball team defeated the No. 6 seed Georgetown Hoyas 78-42 to win the 2024 Big East tournament.

The Huskies now have his 11th straight win in the tournament and his 29th win overall, including his 22nd in the Big East. The win also secured them an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Tournament MVP Paige Backers scored a team-high 27 points with five blocks, four rebounds, three steals, three assists, one turnover and no fouls. While Aaliyah Edwards missed her second straight game with a broken nose, Ice Brady had a great performance with 13 points and 8 rebounds. K.K. Arnold added 10 points, seven rebounds, five assists and four steals, and Nika Muhl contributed nine assists and eight points.

Cadence Samuels came off the bench and scored nine points.

UC was in charge from the beginning. The Huskies started the game on an 11-0 run, making their first five shots and going scoreless for the first four minutes. By the end of the first quarter, UCLA had already built a 17-point lead.

In the second, the Huskies extended their lead even further, going up 44-15 with half a period left, and Georgetown finally woke up. The Hoyas then held Yukon without a field goal for more than four minutes, during which time they built a 10-0 run to get within 19 points.

Shade finally ended the Huskies’ scoring drought with a 3-pointer before halftime, sending his team into the locker room with a 47-25 lead.

After the break, Yukon struggled to regain his initial magic, scoring just his 11 points in the quarter. However, Georgetown was unable to take the lead, scoring only 10 points. The Huskies did their job in the final period, winning by 36 points and taking home the trophy.

UC will take next week off before opening the field for the NCAA Tournament on Selection Sunday. The qualifying show is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET on Sunday, and the Huskies will play a first-round game on Friday, March 3. Saturday, March 22nd or March 23rd.
