‘It looked really bad’…Leon Bailey tells Aston Villa fans worrying news after yesterday’s win
Aston Villa defeated Ajax 4-0 in the second leg to reach the quarter-finals of the Europa Conference League, but star striker Ollie Watkins may have suffered an injury.
Watkins was on fire. Thursday was a good day for him, retaining his place in the England squad for friendlies against Belgium and Brazil. His name was then added to the scoresheet for the 22nd time of the season. He was praised by Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou as “extraordinary”.
Villa need Watkins, who continues to go from strength to strength under Emery. Emery will be keen to bring Watkins back into action against West Ham this weekend as Villa continue to fight for European qualification this season. But he would also want to play for England.
Alan Shearer says he is underrated but one of the most improved players in the Premier League right now, and that says it all. For Villa to do anything this season, they need Watkins to be healthy.
However, in the first half, he hurt his knee and limped off. Manager Unai Emery said after the match that there is still a chance he could still compete for a spot in this weekend’s Premier League match between Villa and West Ham.
But Leon Bailey wasn’t so optimistic. Speaking to TNT Sports after Villa’s 4-0 win over Jordan Henderson’s Ajax, he said Watkins’ injury “looked really bad” when it happened. “When I saw it, it was in really bad shape, it was an open wound. I didn’t want him to go down, but John Durant did a great job. I was sad to see him go,” said Bailey, whose name was also included in the report.
