Southampton finally released list of three players to leave as club set for rebuild

Three Southampton players who may have already played their final game for the club

As contracts expire and loan deals are completed, clubs will have to make decisions about whether they want to keep certain personnel at St Mary’s.

Of course, Russell Martin’s side are still actively involved in the fight for promotion to the Premier League. The outcome of this race may affect the future of some people.

However, no matter what happens by the end of the season, there is a good chance that other players will leave Southampton. With that in mind, here we take a look at three players who may have already played their final game for the Saints.

Alex McCarthy will be removed from the hierarchy when his contract expires
Alex McCarthy used to be a regular at Southampton, but these days he’s a different player. In fact, the goalkeeper has made just one appearance for the club this season. This follows a loss to Gillingham in the League Cup at the start of August. Instead, Gavin Baznu has been a constant presence in the league, while Joe Lumley has only recently appeared in the FA Cup.

Given that Lumley recently signed a new contract with St Mary’s for next season, the fact that McCarthy’s contract expires at the end of this season suggests he may not remain at the club for long. During the January 2023 transfer window, Saints invested a significant amount of money to sign striker Paul Onuachu.

However, during his stay at St. Mary’s University, he could not settle down. Southampton, who were relegated last season, had no striker to score. This saw him move on loan to Turkish club Trabzonspor last summer, where he excelled. It has since been suggested that Trabzonspor may hold negotiations to extend the 29-year-old’s contract, and it appears that he wants to remain in Turkey.

It would certainly make sense for them to sign him considering his lackluster performance at Southampton. If we don’t, we might end up picking players who either struggle to make an impact or don’t want to.
Carlos Alcaraz, who moved to Southampton in January 2023, is another player who has struggled to fully integrate at St Mary’s. As a result, he was allowed to join Juventus on loan during the January transfer window this year. As part of the deal, the Italian giants have the option to sign the Argentine player permanently this summer.

Juventus are said to be interested in negotiating with Southampton to change the terms of his contract in order to extend his stay in Italy. It’s clear that Juventus want the deal to go through, and given the fact that the deal at Southampton hasn’t quite worked out yet, it wouldn’t be too surprising if the deal goes ahead.
