Crystal Palace star might’ve shown Oliver Glasner he doesn’t need £35m signing this summer

As Crystal Palace drew 1-1 with Nottingham Forest, there was one player who continued to show Oliver Glasner he should stick with him.

Crystal Palace‘s afternoon began well with Jean-Philippe Mateta opening the scoring against Nottingham Forest.

The Frenchman was handed a golden opportunity after Jefferson Lerma won the ball before slipping Eberechi Eze through with an excellent pass.

It was then Eze who managed to square it to Mateta for the Frenchman to put the Eagles ahead.

But this wasn’t enough to get the win, with Forest scoring through Chris Wood as the sides played out a 1-1 draw.

However, one player’s performance despite the draw might’ve just shown Palace chiefs they don’t need to waste money on one position this summer.

Jean-Philippe Mateta impresses against Forest

Against Forest, Mateta not only scored but provided a real threat in holding the ball up and facilitating play for his teammates.

He grabbed his third goal in four games under Glasner which shows just how much his fortunes have changed under the Austrian.

His performance was solid, and he can’t seem to stop scoring right now which makes it it common sense that he’s got the position locked down.

But despite his good form, there are still murmurs of his place being on the line as Palace look to recruit a new striker this summer.

However, Mateta has been showing that maybe a replacement isn’t needed lately, and he could end up saving the club millions.

Mateta could end up making £35m signing unnecessary

With Mateta becoming a solid and consistent performer under Glasner, the urgent need for Palace to sign a striker could be easing.

This could see the Eagles effectively saved a chunk of cash which can be better of being used elsewhere.

One option that’s been reported is Eddie Nketiah of Arsenal, with a bid even being made in January.

Nketiah has been reported to have a fee of potentially £35m, which Arsenal would then hope to use for their striker position.

If Mateta does manage to continue performing like this, there’d be no surprise to see him still starting up-front come August.
