Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is said to have made Vincent Kompany his top aim to succeed Antonio Conte as manager. The Manchester City legend is said to have “blown away” Levy with his work at Burnley, where he has revamped the Clarets and accelerated their promotion to the Premier League.
If Kompany were to join Spurs, he would need a large transfer budget to bring in some new energy and young talent. Express Sport examines a possible Spurs lineup next season under the Belgian.
Hugo Lloris is nearing the end of his illustrious Spurs career and could be replaced in the summer. The Frenchman has been plagued by injuries over the last 18 months, and Kompany – or whoever Spurs’ manager is – may decide to bring in a new goalkeeper.
The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium has been linked with Brentford’s Spanish shot-stopper David Raya. The 27-year-old’s Brentford contract expires in the summer, and he could be available for a bargain price.
Defenders: Pedro Porro, Cristian Romero, Alessandro Bastoni, Ian Maatsen
One of Kompany’s key changes could be to ditch the 5-2-3 formation used by his predecessor. Spurs could invest heavily in defence over the coming months.
Left-back Ian Maatsen was a standout in Kompany’s dramatic promotion campaign with Burnley. The Dutchman is surplus to requirements at parent club Chelsea, and a good offer might see him leave Stamford Bridge.
Spurs could also look for a new centre-back to partner Cristian Romero, as Eric Dier can be uneasy in a back four. Last summer, they were linked with Alessandro Bastoni, and they could renew their interest ahead of the 2023-24 season.
