Daniel Farke has provided his Leeds United team news for Saturday’s new season opener.
Leeds United boss Daniel Farke is relishing a rare opportunity as he prepares for the Championship opener against Portsmouth.
The German, who led the Whites to a 90-point finish and a play-off final place last season, was backed by 49ers Enterprises to steer the ship into a second promotion charge and after an impressive pre-season that will begin on Saturday at Elland Road.
Leeds United manager Daniel Farke is excited about a rare chance as he prepares for the Championship season opener against Portsmouth. After leading the team to a 90-point finish and a play-off final last season, Farke has received backing from 49ers Enterprises for another promotion push. With a successful pre-season behind them, the new campaign will start on Saturday at Elland Road.
However, the former Sheffield United player and his entire squad are fit and prepared to face Portsmouth on Saturday.
Farke commented, “Everyone is available, which is great news. It’s rare for me to have all players fit and ready for the first game of the season. I’m a bit surprised, as you usually see a minor muscle injury after such intense pre-season work. Kudos to our physios, sports scientists, and the players. We were fortunate to avoid contact injuries [against Valencia], with only a minor dead leg for Jayden, but he’s set to play. All players are ready to go.”
The only injury concern is 15-year-old Harry Gray, who has a back issue that is less serious than initially feared. However, the younger brother of £40m summer transfer Archie was not expected to feature in the Championship so soon.
Leeds have been carefully managing Patrick Bamford’s fitness after his knee surgery at the end of last season. However, he was able to play for a few minutes towards the end of the Valencia game and is expected to be included in the matchday squad for Saturday.
Based on Farke’s pre-season team selections and interviews, it seems likely that young Mateo Joseph will start as the striker against Portsmouth, with Joel Piroe also a potential option for the central forward position.
