Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds are likely somewhat perplexed by one Phil Parkinson call at Wrexham this season.

The Red Dragons’ promotion hopes have taken somewhat of a hammering in the last week or so.

Wrexham drew 0-0 with Leyton Orient on Saturday, allowing Birmingham City to overtake them at the League One summit.

The Welsh outfit then faced another trip away from the Racecourse Ground on Tuesday evening, taking on Stevenage.

It was a flat display from the home side, with Louis Thompson scoring the only goal of the day to see Stevenage beat Wrexham 1-0.

There were a number of concerning displays from the Wrexham players on the pitch in midweek.

Thomas O’Connor underperformed for Wrexham vs Stevenage at centre-back but the biggest problem area for Phil Parkinson coming out of the game was up front.

Parkinson should be concerned about Wrexham’s attacking threat, or lack thereof, from his team’s last two fixtures.

Against Leyton Orient over the weekend, the recently promoted side were able to muster up a dismal two shots on goal.

And on Tuesday, his side fared even worse, with Wrexham having just one effort on goal across 90 minutes at Broadhall Way.

This sudden drop in form from his attackers is not ideal and comes at a time when Wrexham really need to be picking up wins in order to keep pace with the League One leaders.

It is also probably somewhat puzzling to owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds given the sheer amount of quality centre-forwards the Wrexham manager now has at his disposal.

Jack Marriott impressed for Wrexham early in the campaign, scoring four in his first six League One outings of 2024/25.

Meanwhile, Ollie Palmer and Paul Mullin are both previously proven at this level but are largely yet to step up in the current campaign.

This would be a big problem for Wrexham but McElhenney and Reynolds have only recently smashed the club’s transfer record to sign Modou Faal.

Wrexham paid West Bromwich Albion £590,000 for Faal late in August and their Hollywood owners likely expected big things from the striker given the fee paid for him.

However, somewhat bizarrely, Parkinson is still yet to give the 21-year-old an appearance in the league since his summer move. In fact, his only outing to date came in the EFL Trophy versus Salford City.

Most new signings do normally need some time to get up to speed when they join a new club but the fact Parkinson has left Faal out of the last four Wrexham matchday squads in League One will surely leave both McElhenney and Reynolds puzzled.

The Americans paid big money for the forward and you would think now Wrexham are struggling on the goal front, he would be given a chance to step up but so far, that has not proven to be the case.
