‘Aggressive’ defender outlined as Wrexham show keen interest in free transfer deal

Wrexham are back in League One and we are starting to see the transfer rumour mill kick into her as Phil Parkinson weighs up new signings.

Back-to-back promotions leave Wrexham needing reinforcements to prepare for life in League One.

Phil Parkinson has a strong base to build upon but Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds will certainly need to fund new signings this summer.

Wrexham announced a retained list earlier in May with the likes of Luke Young and Ben Tozer leaving the club.

Parkinson will need signings to not only replace those who are leaving, but also to strengthen the Wrexham squad.

Reports on Friday suggested that Wrexham have shown a real interest in signing the released Wigan Athletic trio Tom Pearce, Stephen Humphrys and Josh Magennis.

Wrexham want Marvin Ekpiteta

Another name can now be added to the list in former Blackpool defender Marvin Ekpiteta.

The Fearless In Devotion podcast report that Wrexham are interested in signing Ekpiteta this summer.

It’s noted that Ekpiteta wants to play in the Championship but could be tempted by a move to Wrexham.

Ekpiteta hails from London and a return south may well have appealed, but Fearless in Devotion note that relocating to North Wales may not be a problem.

The 28-year-old centre back has been released by Blackpool this summer and is available to sign on a free transfer.

Wrexham just released three centre backs with Tozer, Aaron Hayden and Jordan Tunnicliffe all leaving the club this summer.

Ekpiteta may now be viewed as a replacement, offering League One experience as Wrexham prepare for life back in the third tier.

Who is Wrexham target Ekpiteta?

Ekpiteta hails from Enfield but started his career in the youth ranks at Oxford United.

After failing to make the grade at the Kassam Stadium, Ekpiteta dropped into non-league football with Chelmsford City.

Ekpiteta moved around the non-league scene with Concord Rangers and East Thurrock United before getting his big move.

The 6ft 4in centre back joined Leyton Orient in 2017 and actually played against Wrexham in April of that year.

That move helped Ekpiteta develop his career, moving from the National League to League Two and then League One by 2020.

Ekpiteta has racked up almost 150 appearances for Blackpool and was even a regular in the Championship during the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons.

Ekpiteta was in and out of the Blackpool side to start the season but ended the campaign with 14 successive starts.

Hailed as ‘outstanding’ by Blackpool boss Neil Critchley, Ekpiteta has proven himself at League One and even Championship level.

That is the kind of signing Wrexham are seeking and Ekpiteta appears to fit the bill alongside Pearce, Humphrys and Magennis in terms of League One experience.
