The Alabama Basketball team has seen its fourth player enter the transfer portal in Freshman Sam Walters
Alabama Basketball team has seen another player enter his name into the transfer portal. The latest decision was made by Sam Walters. The freshman averaged 5.4 points per game while shooting 39% from three in 12.3 minutes per game. As a recruit, Sam Walters was a top-100 prospect in the class and the 17th-ranked power forward.
The loss comes as a bit of a surprise as Walters was looking at an increased role in 2024-25, especially with the loss of Rylan Griffen and the potential loss of Grant Nelson. The Tide will certainly need to pursue players at the power forward position if Grant Nelson declares for the NBA Draft.
The Tide are bringing in a talented group at small forward and power forward in Derrion Reid, Aiden Sherrell, and Naas Cunningham who will look to fill the void of a few of the departures we’ve seen early on. USF transfer Chris Youngblood may also see increased playing time at small forward now when the Tide looks to play smaller lineups.
The departure of Walters gives Nate Oats and Alabama Basketball one open scholarship to use in the transfer portal. The Crimson Tide have been in contact with several of the nation’s top transfers and will certainly push for a center. If the Tide does pursue a center, Rutgers big man Clifford Omoruyi is the name to watch. Alabama reached out to him early in the process.
Despite heavy transfers out, the Crimson Tide are improving
While Alabama Basketball has lost four players to the transfer portal overall, the talent has taken a massive jump. The Tide bring in three top 50 recruits in Naas Cunningham, Derrion Reid, and Aiden Sherrell while also adding two of the Nation’s top transfers in Houston Mallette and Chris Youngblood. The losses may seem significant but, it’s likely that Oats has bigger plans for the additions rather than some of the team’s holdovers.
