Andy Gray insists nothing should tarnish Bill Kenwright’s legacy at Everton after his death was announced at the age of 78 on Tuesday (24 October).
Kenwright had served on the board at Goodison Park since 1989 and acted as chairman for 19 years, with the club saying they were in “mourning” following his death.
Everton have had their financial issues in the boardroom in recent times but former Toffees striker Gray, speaking on beIN SPORTS with Richard Keys, said Kenwright should be remembered for his dedication to the club
In quotes reported by the Liverpool Echo, Gray said: “Bill has had a tough, let’s say, seven or eight years, health, and with Everton, it has to be said.
“But the one thing you can’t deny is what it said there: Bill Kenwright was born an Evertonian and died an Evertonian.
“He absolutely loved the club, and I just hope and pray, Richard, that the last seven or eight years doesn’t tarnish that memory because he doesn’t deserve to.”
Spot on
Gray is absolutely spot on with what he says here. Of course, there were criticisms of the board at times, especially in recent years as the club’s financial situation spiralled and a series of poor decisions left the club struggling.
But Kenwright dedicated his life to Everton, he absolutely loved the club, he bled blue, and his intentions were always good – all he ever wanted was the best for the team he absolutely adored his whole life.
Everton have lost a truly great figure, one who was clearly respected judging by the plethora of tributes that flooded in from across the world of football, both inside and outside of Everton.
There will be plenty of time to dissect the legacy Kenwright left at Goodison Park but, for now, the right thing to do is just remember a man with a deep connection, a true love, and a fierce passion for Everton.
