With all the scrutiny over the players Arsenal have bought in this season, one of the players that sporting director Edu and manager Mikel Arteta sold last summer has become a forgotten man. After seven seasons in north London, centre-back Rob Holding was sold to Crystal Palace for what appeared a modest £4million fee.
Some fans questioned the sale, given a lack of squad depth arguably cost the club dear in the title race in the 2023/24 season, and particularly the palty free for such an experienced player. But Holding’s career has stalled since his move across London, and he’s yet to make a Premier League appearance for the Eagles.
After a prolonged issue, Holding underwent an operation for a foot and ankle problem in January. Following the procedure, then manager Roy Hodgson refused to put a date on his return.
“So he was operated on,” said Hodgson. “I would like to say and think that he could get back before the end of the season. But if he is going to get back, it won’t be in the near future.”
