Barnsley FC finally released list of six star players that may leave Oakwell Stadium this summer

Barnsley are expected to see several first-team players move on at the end of their contracts this summer, the Barnsley Chronicle has said.

Barnsley will be playing League One football again next season after coming up short in the play-offs.

The Tykes were beaten by Bolton Wanderers in the play-off semi-final despite winning 3-2 in the second leg and Ian Evatt’s side will now face Oxford United for a place in the 2024/25 Championship roster.

It’s been a challenging season for Oakwell off the pitch and that has played a factor in their success on it. They’re currently without a permanent manager following the late decision to sack Neill Collins and some big work needs to be done before the new campaign.

There are several first-team players at Barnsley out of contract and fresh reports have indicated that many are poised to move on.

The Barnsley Chronicle lists first-team stars Devante Cole, Jordan Williams, Herbie Kane, Nicky Cadden and sidelined duo Robbie Cundy and Matty Wolfe among those with expiring deals, and the expectation is that the majority will not see their contracts extended.

There are extension options in the deals of Ben Killip, Aiden Marsh and Joe Ackroyd though.

A huge summer awaits

The coming months are going to be vital for Barnsley.

It looks as though a whole host of key first-team players will be moving on at the end of their contracts and they will need replacing. A rebuild of the playing squad awaits and they will be doing so under the lead of a new boss.

So, not only does recruitment of players need to be spot on, but the Tykes have to ensure the next boss is the right man to lead the club forward as they turn over a new leaf.

Doing so successfully will have them right in the promotion fight, but if they fail, they could be cut adrift from the play-offs having so nearly slipped out late in the season.

A tough year

The season ended in disappointment at Oakwell with the play-off defeat to Bolton Wanderers.

It’s been a tough year off the pitch though too. A recent move to appoint Dominik Thalhammer fell through because of work permit issues, meaning the club were ultimately made to pay for their risky decision to sack Collins so late in the season.

The FA Cup disqualification marked an embarrassing saga for the club too.

Next year will be about showing improvements across all facets of the club, and they can start off on the right foot with a productive summer and encouraging managerial appointment.
