Boston Celtics to consider Two-Way Contract this summer with veteran star

The NBA Summer League is an excellent opportunity for the league’s young players to compete for a roster place.

There will be around 400 players vying for a spot on an NBA roster in 2023, but only about 30 non-rookies will be successful. Among them is a member of the Boston Celtics’ summer squad that nobody expected.

Jay Scrubb has been a standout for the Celtics, emerging as the team’s top player after four games. In those games, the 22-year-old scored a total of 66 points.

Scrubb’s performance has led many to assume that he is worthy of a two-way contract. With JD Davison signing on for another season earlier this summer, the Celtics have two more to give, which means Scrubb might stay.

That is, if he wishes to do so.

Scrubb has already declined two-way deal offers, so a return to the G-League may not sound all that appealing. After all, he has 24 NBA games under his belt with the Los Angeles Clippers and Orlando Magic. He’s even stated that he feels he’ll be NBA ready for the summer schedule.

“It was a crazy transition for me, going from junior college to the league, but I feel like my talent speaks for itself,” Scrubb told the Boston Herald’s Steve Hewitt on Sunday. “I can compete with the best, and I’m here to prove it.” Just faith in myself, there are a lot of talented men competing out here. I just want to prove that I’m one of the top players on this team. That is what I truly desire.”

The Celtics have other alternatives as well, with Justin Champagnie and Olek Balcerowski also enjoying strong summers.
