In recent NBA trade rumors, the Boston Celtics have been linked to Damian Lillard. While the Portland Trail Blazers player has made it clear where he wants to play, it appears Boston is preparing for a different big move.
Grant Williams just left the Boston Celtics after agreeing to a sign-and-trade with the San Antonio Spurs and Dallas Mavericks in July. The Celtics got cap space and two future second-round picks as part of the deal.
All of this is apparently part of the Celtics’ front office’s long-term strategy this summer. While the Celtics aim to sign Jaylen Brown to a contract extension, making him one of the highest-paid NBA players, it looks that something even bigger is in the works for the future.
According to Adam Himmelsbach of the Boston Globe, the Celtics have been amassing assets and future capital in order to be well-positioned to make a blockbuster trade for a superstar.
“No, the Celtics do not intend to launch a youth movement based on draft picks.” According to league sources, this capital will eventually serve as currency in a larger trade, with the Celtics well-positioned for a seismic strike. The recent flurry of activity has fueled suspicion that they are plotting their big move right now, but a league insider says it is improbable.”
The Boston Celtics’ long-term trade plans, according to Adam Himmelsbach
Lillard and the 76ers of Philadelphia Both All-Star guard James Harden and All-Star forward Kevin Durant have wanted moves this summer. Lillard, on the other hand, only wants to play for the Miami Heat, while Harden wants to be traded to the Los Angeles Clippers.
While neither player will play for the Red Sox next season, CEO Brad Stevens appears to be looking for the next superstar who may demand a trade. NBA teams are keeping an eye on reigning MVP Joel Embiid, and Giannis Antetokounmpo if the Milwaukee Bucks stumble in the playoffs next season.
Boston has no imminent plans, and it’s unlikely that any perennial All-Star guard or center will demand a trade in the coming months. However, Stevens and the Celtics are taking steps now to position themselves to make a competitive offer and possibly execute a trade for a superstar in the future.
