Boston Celtics finally reveals Blake Griffin plans in free agency for the upcoming 2023-24 season

Last season, Boston Celtics big Blake Griffin provided a veteran presence off the bench, but there’s no guarantee he’ll be back in Beantown this year.

According to MassLive’s Brian Robb, there has been little talk of a new contract for the unrestricted free agent. Instead, the six-time All-Star could be on his way to another team in his 16th season.

“It’s been eerily quiet on the Blake Griffin front since the season ended,” Robb observed. “Brad Stevens made no mention of him in any of his press conferences, which could be interpreted as a sign that the team is moving on.”

The C’s now have one available roster place, but they might make more by releasing someone at the conclusion of the rotation. Griffin is a vocal veteran with lots of experience as a rebounder and a tenacious defender, and while his numbers last season weren’t particularly impressive, he became a fan favorite for his enthusiasm and occasional ability to turn the clock back.

The 34-year-old has had a difficult career, having had repeated knee injuries that hampered his meteoric rise. Griffin is far beyond his peak, but after losing crucial defensive players like Marcus Smart and Grant Williams, his return would be welcomed by many Celtics fans. It doesn’t appear likely that he’ll be back in green next year, but it can’t be ruled out totally.

“For now, the Celtics may want the roster flexibility to consider other additions, knowing that Griffin is available as a backup plan for another true big,” Robb said. “The team is probably not ready to commit guaranteed money to him until other options have been ruled out.”

Wherever Griffin ends up next year, hopefully he’ll be able to compete for his first NBA championship and end his impressive career on a high note.
