This season, the Boston Celtics will have to make a trade before the trade deadline. Whether it’s a big change or a few little tweaks, they’ll need to do something if they want to be considered serious title contenders.
We at the Houdini decided to get an early start on our trade deadline objectives for the Cs, providing a couple of pipe dreams that could become reality targets as well as one realistic target.
Here are three Celtics trade deadline targets that are much too early.
No. 1 Way too early Boston Celtics trade deadline target: Monte Morris
Monte Morris, a free agency in 2024, might be a Celtics trade deadline target. Morris might be available as a rental for the Celtics’ second-half run in 2024. Morris might potentially act as backup point guard, given Malcolm Brogdon has a history of ailments.
Morris, who appeared in 62 games last season and averaged 10 points and five assists, would be an excellent addition to the Cs. With Morris on the Detroit Pistons, there is a good chance he will be traded to a contending team before the trade deadline.
I’d expect the Cs to be interested in a player like Morris.
No. 2 Way too early Boston Celtics trade deadline target: Damian Lillard
Things may get interesting if the Portland Trailblazers decide to keep Damian Lillard and compel him to play this season. The Celtics have the assets to make a deal happen, and the more time passes, the higher chance the team has of landing him.
With the uncertainty surrounding Jaylen Brown’s contract discussions, the potential of Brown being traded for Lillard rises. Even if the Cs do not trade Brown for Lillard, the possibility of acquiring Lillard has been discussed. According to most reports, Jayson Tatum advocated for Lillard and the Celtics inquired about him.
If Lillard opens the season with the Blazers, I would be watching him.
No. 3 Way too early Boston Celtics trade deadline target: Joel Embiid
The Celtics’ pursuit of Joel Embiid is a pipe dream, but it could become a reality this season. The Philadelphia 76ers are currently in a bad situation, and if James Harden leaves, they would be considerably worse. Although Embiid has stated that he will remain with the 76ers indefinitely, I believe he will eventually request a trade, as most NBA superstars do.
Because of his relationship with Tatum, the Celtics would have to be the favorites if Embiid requested a trade. If Embiid becomes available next season, the Celtics will be ready to strike.
