Boston Celtics Summer Leaguer now Signs With West Contender

The Boston Celtics’ Summer League roster was reduced by one player.

The C’s stocked their Summer League roster with NBA veterans following the 2023 NBA Draft, but one is leaving to join a Western Conference contender two years removed from their previous NBA Finals appearance.

After three years with the Utah Jazz, Udoka Azubuike joined the Celtics in July. However, after averaging 7.4 points and 6.6 rebounds in five Summer League games for Boston, Azubuike reportedly signed a two-way contract with the Phoenix Suns on Monday, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

Last season, Azubuike averaged 3.3 points and 3.5 rebounds while collecting 1.6 shot attempts per game while playing only 10 minutes off Utah’s bench.

The Celtics did not face the 23-year-old last season, as Azubuike was a non-factor in both Boston-Utah games. Azubuike played a career-high 36 games after sitting out the first five games of the season.

Azubuike, who is 6-foot-10, joins a Phoenix team loaded with size, where he will play with DeAndre Ayton, Bismack Biyombo, and Bol Bol.
