Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz has reacted to his side’s abysmal 5-0 defeat to Crystal Palace on the final day of the 2023/24 Premier League campaign.
It’s been a remarkable season for Aston Villa and one that won’t be overcast by the woeful 5-0 loss to Crystal Palace on Sunday afternoon.
The Villans ended the campaign as they started it, conceding five goals, however, Unai Emery’s side’s performance was far more commendable at St James’ Park back in August.
That being said, it was party time for the Villa squad, who secured a fourth-place finish earlier in the week, confirming their place in next season’s Champions League, sparking wild celebrations on Tuesday night.
After Villa’s hard work throughout the 2023/24 campaign was rewarded with a top-four finish, there wasn’t much to complain about at Selhurst Park, a feeling shared by one Villa star who took to social media after the heavy defeat.

The away end serenaded the players throughout the contest and after the full-time whistle, telling of the insignificance of the result on the day in South London.
Douglas Luiz joined those who decided to celebrate the season rather than focus on the 5-0 final-day defeat, taking to Instagram to say: ‘We need to enjoy everything. I love all the fans and this club.’
It was a strange day for Villa at Selhurst Park, as Emery’s side were taunted by the Crystal Palace fans for their lack of quality, in a result that didn’t seem to phase both those involved and the supporters watching on.
The primary factor in Villa’s season being a success was securing a Champions League finish, which was confirmed with time to spare, making the 5-0 loss to Palace merely a game to forget on a day to celebrate.
Douglas Luiz was poor against Crystal Palace
For his positivity on Instagram after the defeat, Luiz had a bad day at the office and was slammed for his performance by journalist Jacob Tanswell throughout.
While things will be excused due to there being nothing to play for on the final day, there has been some concern over the Brazil international’s form of late, where he has looked to be a shadow of the player seen earlier in the campaign.
A lot of this can be attributed to the loss of Boubacar Kamara, as well as the number of games that Villa played over the 2023/24 calendar, making the summer an important one for rest and reflection ahead of next season.
For Luiz, up next comes the Copa America that starts in a month where better performances will be expected from the Brazilian on the international stage.
