Birmingham City have confirmed the departure of Mark Venus ahead of the arrival of their new manager.
Venus leaves Blues after Tony Mowbray permanently stepped down from his position two weeks ago. Venus joined Blues as assistant manager when Mowbray was appointed in January.
The 57-year-old took charge of Blues on an interim basis when Mowbray stepped down in February but his tenure only lasted six games. Blues lost five of Venus’s matches to become embroiled in the relegation scrap.
Gary Rowett was drafted in to replace Venus for the final eight games but he wasn’t able to save Blues from relegation to League One despite taking 11 points.
Blues are now searching for the fourth permanent manager of the Knighthead era and Venus, unsurprisingly, won’t be part of the coaching staff. Alex Neil has held talks over the vacancy and others have been spoken to.
Venus has been by Mowbray’s side throughout his entire 20-year managerial career and could return to football when the manager is fit and ready. Speaking after his Blues exit was confirmed, Mowbray said he plans to coach again.
He said: “Once I have fully recovered and have spent some quality time with my family, I intend to make a return to football management at the appropriate moment.”
