BREAKING NEWS: Blackburn Rovers keen to snap up free agent after Hull City exit

Blackburn Rovers are keen on signing Greg Docherty following his exit from Hull City, according to the Daily Record (live transfer blog, 23.05.24, 11.04).

Blackburn Rovers are ready to throw the midfielder a Championship lifeline following his recent departure from Hull City. The Scotsman’s contract at the MKM Stadium officially expires at the end of next month and he is due to become a free agent.

Docherty, 27, joined the Tigers in 2020 and helped them win the League One title under their former boss Grant McCann in his first year. He has made 142 appearances for the East Yorkshire outfit in all competitions and has scored seven goals.

In this latest update regarding his future by the Daily Record, Rovers are said to be interested in snapping him up for nothing as they prepare for another year in the second tier. John Eustace managed to keep them up in this past season.

Blackburn Rovers eye departed Hull City man

Blackburn Rovers could see Docherty as someone to add more competition and depth to their options in the middle of the park.

He saw his game time at Hull City dry up last term due to competition for his place in the starting XI from Jean Michael Seri, Tyler Morton and Regan Slater, and he slipped down the pecking order under their former boss Liam Rosenior.

The former Scotland youth international was linked with League One pair Charlton Athletic and Bristol Rovers in the last January transfer window, as per reporter Darren Witcoop on X, but nothing materialised in the end and he stayed put this past winter.

Docherty rose up through the academy ranks at Hamilton Academical and was a regular for them at various different youth levels before breaking into their first-team.

He went on to play 108 matches for the Accies as a youngster before Rangers lured him to Ibrox in January 2018.

The Glasgow-born man then played 19 matches for the Gers, as well as having loan spells away at Shrewsbury Town and Hibernian to boost his development.
