Southampton are looking at bringing Villarreal striker Ben Brereton Díaz, back to the Premier League from La Liga.
With Southampton returning to the Premier League after beating Leeds United in the Championship play-off final 1-0, manager Russell Martin is preparing to make signings to improve his current squad.
One player he’s interested in bringing to St Mary’s is Chilean international Brereton Díaz.
The forward is currently at the Copa América with Chile after a loan spell with relegated Premier League side Sheffield United.
How did Brereton Díaz perform last season?
Brereton Díaz started last season with his parent club Villarreal, playing 14 times without scoring in La Liga. He also featured for them in the Europa League but again failed to register a goal.
In January, he joined relegation-threatened Sheffield United on loan. In 14 Premier League games, he scored six goals and registered one assist.
Unfortunately, his goals weren’t enough to turn around the fortunes of Sheffield United who were relegated, leaving Brereton Díaz to return to Spain.
Will Brereton Díaz move to Southampton?
The Sun reported that Brereton Díaz was one of three players that Southampton were interested in bringing to St Mary’s before the start of the new season.

The Sun reported that Brereton Díaz was one of three players that Southampton were interested in bringing to St Mary’s before the start of the new season.
They stated that Villarreal would be willing to let the striker leave on loan with an option to buy at the end of the loan deal.
His current deal with the Spanish side is set to expire in June 2027, according to Capology.
Is Brereton Diaz needed by Southampton?
In the attacking positions, Southampton have got two players of real quality with plenty of cover available.
Adam Armstrong scored 24 goals last season and Che Adams scored 17. The pair were crucial in firing Southampton straight back to the Premier League.
The Saints also have Ross Stewart, who had an injury-hit season, and 21-year-old Sékou Mara, who scored six times last season. However, neither Stewart nor Mara have played in the Premier League before.
Brereton Díaz might only have 14 Premier League games under his belt, but he scored six goals in a Sheffield United side that struggled. This experience and goals could be crucial if Southampton want to avoid the drop next season.
