Brentford manager Thomas Frank has stated that he would be “more than happy” for Ivan Toney to stay at Brentford this summer despite interest from West Ham, Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal.
Going into the summer, many people at Brentford expected Toney to be on his way out this summer. The Bees completed a club-record £30m move for Brazilian striker Igor Thiago from Club Brugge. The 28-year-old Toney has also entered the final year of his contract, so Brentford ideally want to sell him before losing him on a free transfer.
Brentford were originally hoping to receive a fee of up to £70m for their star man. However, interest has declined in the player most likely due to his betting history. This has led to the Bees reportedly dropping their valuation of the Englishman to £40-50m. This makes him a lot more accessible for the three London clubs interested in his services, but there is more likely better value for money deals out there right now, so it could be revisited at the end of the window if they have been unable to sign a striker.
Speaking after Brentford’s 5-2 win over AFC Wimbledon on Saturday, Thomas Frank said: “You never know (if he could leave). He’s a Brentford player and I would love him to stay. That would give me a very positive challenge. But I haven’t met a coach who doesn’t want as many good players as possible. Right now, Ivan is a Brentford player.”
“I know he’s enjoying his well-deserved time off after his time with England. I would be more than happy if he stayed with us. He’s a goal scorer and that’s very good to have in your team so if you want to buy him, it’s expensive.”
At this stage, it appears that the Hammers would be most likely to make a move for Toney. The club are pushing to get a deal over the line for Jhon Duran of Aston Villa, however, they have been unable to agree on a fee as of yet after a couple of weeks of negotiations. Tottenham’s pursuit of Toney could heat up if Richarlison leaves, he has been heavily linked to a move to Saudi Arabian side Al-Ahli. Spurs have reportedly set a £60m price-tag for the Brazilian, which could fund a move for the former Peterborough man.
