The Browns’ trade offer for their former starting quarterback falls short.

The Cleveland Browns tried to re-sign a former starting quarterback before the NFL trade deadline, but their best offer fell short.

On Tuesday, October 31, John Sabol of Fox8News in Cleveland tweeted that the Browns had offered the Washington Commanders a sixth-round selection pick in exchange for Jacoby Brissett. That suggestion, however, was rejected by the Commanders.

The Cleveland Browns have traded Donovan Peoples-Jones to the Detroit Lions.

“#Browns offered the #Commanders a 6th-Rd pick for Jacoby Brissett, per @JPFinlayNBCS,” Sabol wrote. “This goes back to my tweet earlier this afternoon that Washington holds all the leverage and would want more in return for Brissett….”

The Browns’ Quarterback Room Has Been Depleted Ahead of the 2023 Season

Under center, Cleveland has made numerous recent decisions that have come back to hurt them.

Prior to the start of the regular season, the Browns traded former backup Jacoby Brissett, and a seventh-round pick to the Arizona Cardinals in exchange for a fifth-round pick. Dobbs started eight games in Arizona and played competitively before being sold to the Minnesota Vikings on Tuesday for a sixth-round pick and a conditional seventh-round pick.

Dobbs won’t start for the Vikings in Week 9. However, he has a legitimate shot to compete for the starting job against rookie Jaren Hall moving forward.

Cleveland brought Dobbs back following a stint together in 2022 to replace Brissett. The Browns were unable to keep Brissett on the roster this offseason, mostly because he was looking for a shot at a starting job.

Cleveland couldn’t give Brissett the opportunity because Deshaun Watson is only in the second year of a five-year, $230 million contract that is fully guaranteed. That agreement also ensures that, come hell or high water, Watson will have the starting position when he is healthy.

As a result, Brissett agreed to a one-year, $8 million contract in Washington. He is a backup to second-year quarterback Sam Howell and has yet to start a game for the Commanders in 2023, but his chance might come at any time as Washington (3-5) become sellers ahead of the trade deadline and is playing for the future.

Depending on how things play out in Minnesota and Washington, two Browns backups from one year ago might end up starting for three different NFL franchises in 2023 between them.

As the NFL Trade Deadline approaches, the Browns’ quarterback situation remains uncertain.

With Dobbs and Brissett both valued elsewhere, the Browns bet on Dorian Thompson-Robinson behind Watson — assuming they needed him.

They needed him in Week 4 against the Baltimore Ravens after Watson suffered a shoulder injury the previous Sunday against the Tennessee Titans. The rookie quarterback threw three interceptions in his one NFL start and hasn’t touched the ball since. However, Watson’s shoulder concerns have continued, leaving Cleveland to rely on P.J. Walker to provide championship-level defense this season.

Walker was a backup with the Carolina Panthers for three years before signing with the Chicago Bears this offseason. The plan for Walker was to backup Justin Fields in the Windy City, though the Bears quickly abandoned that idea and paid Walker $2 million just to go away in favor of undrafted D-II rookie Tyson Bagent.

Walker is expected to start for the third time this season when the Browns (4-3) play the Cardinals on Sunday. Walker had six turnovers and one score in his two previous starts, as well as a game against the Indianapolis Colts in which he took the great bulk of the offensive snaps.
