Yankees Executive’s Wife Killed After Tree Falls on Her Car During Storm, Team Calls Death an ‘Unimaginable Loss’
The New York Yankees are in mourning after Cathy Tusiani, wife of the team’s senior vice president of partnerships Michael J. Tusiani, was killed after a tree fell on top of her car during a storm.
According to a press release from the North Castle Police Department, a tree fell on Cathy’s 2021 Toyota at approximately 5:30 PM on Wednesday, April 3, as she was driving northbound on Route 128 in Armonk, New York.
At the time of the incident, winds were gusting past 50 mph, and Cathy was less than a mile from her home, reports CBS New York.
While the incident remains under investigation, police confirmed she was the vehicle’s sole occupant.
In a statement released on Thursday, April 4, the Yankees remembered Cathy as a “beloved” individual.
“Words cannot capture the devastating impact that is being felt within the Yankees family after the sudden and tragic loss of Cathy Tusiani,” the statement reads. “Cathy was beloved by our front office staffers, who were privileged to experience and bear witness to her kindness, intelligence, sense of humor, and great love for her husband, Michael, over the two-plus decades of dedicated service he has provided the Yankees organization and the Steinbrenner family.”
The organization said they “share in the pain and grief with Michael, daughters Alexa and Julia, and the entire Tusiani family.”
“The Yankees stand with them to offer our complete support and unconditional love as we navigate this unimaginable loss,” the team added.
“The circumstances surrounding Catherine’s tragic accident serve as an unfortunate reminder of the unpredictable nature of life, particularly in the face of adverse weather conditions,” Westchester County Executive George Latimer told the New York Post.
“In the wake of this tragedy, we will learn what we can to identify any factors that contributed to the accident and explore measures that we could take to prevent similar occurrences in the future,” Latimer continued.
FOX 5 NY reported that throughout Wednesday evening, multiple surrounding areas were under high wind warnings, including New York City, Long Island, northeastern New Jersey, and coastal Westchester.
There were two additional reports of trees falling as a result of the storm including one in Central Park and another in a “far-northern Manhattan neighborhood,” per CBS News.
