Deal agreed as Nottingham Forest make final £5m transfer decision for super striker

Nottingham Forest transfer news from NottinghamshireLive: Sam Surridge is destined for a £5 million move to MLS club Nashville SC, despite interest from Leeds United and Ipswich Town.

According to sources, Nottingham Forest striker Sam Surridge has agreed to a £5 million transfer to MLS club Nashville SC.

Despite receiving interest from multiple Championship clubs since the transfer market opened, 24-year-old Surridge appears to have chosen to go to the United States, an unusual move for a player in his prime.

According to the Athletic, Forest and Nashville have agreed on the cost, which may climb to £6 million if Surridge and his probable new team have a successful MLS season.

“Nashville, currently third in the Eastern Conference, have presented a strong proposal to the former England under-21 international, and their determination to land Surridge can be accurately gauged by the finances involved,” writes Daniel Taylor of The Athletic.

“To put it in context, the only player in Nashville’s history with a higher transfer cost is Ake Loba, the Ivory Coast striker who joined them from Mexican club Monterrey in 2021 for $6.8 million (£5.2 million).

“Because Loba returned to Mexico earlier this year, Nashville has been looking for a striker to replace him.” Their data and research immediately identified Surridge as a player who, if given a regular role on the team, might be a prolific scorer.”

Surridge’s Forest career will be remembered fondly by Reds fans. He joined the City Ground from Stoke City in January of last year for a rumoured sum of £2.2 million.

He went on to score seven goals in five starts and 12 substitute appearances as Forest defeated Huddersfield in the Championship play-off final at Wembley Stadium, ending a 23-year absence from the top level.

Surridge, on the other hand, struggled for game time last season as the Reds sought to avoid being one-season wonders in the Premier League. His lone goal came against old side Bournemouth, although he spent the majority of his time on Steve Cooper’s substitutes’ bench.

With one year remaining on his current Forest deal, an exit seemed imminent this summer, with relegated Leeds United and Ipswich Town both said to be interested. Few, though, predicted a move to the MLS.

He is expected to establish “a potent partnership alongside prolific attacking midfielder Hany Mukhtar, the reigning MLS MVP,” according to The Mirror.
