Tony Mitchell appeared in seven games last season for Alabama but was not seen in uniform on A-Day.
Alabama sophomore defensive back Tony Mitchell has entered the NCAA transfer portal, sources told 247 Sports’ Matt Zenitz and Chris Hummer on Tuesday.
Mitchell was not spotted in uniform for Alabama’s April 13 A-Day game. He had been seen in uniform at practice the preceding Tuesday, the last time reporters were able to view practice before the spring game.
A four-star prospect in the 2023 class from Thompson (Alabaster, Ala.) High School ranked No. 195 nationally by 247 Sports, Mitchell appeared in seven games last season, mostly on special teams. His role was uncertain in Alabama’s new defense, and was not part of the second-team safety group in practices viewed by reporters this spring.
Shortly after enrolling early at Alabama last year, Mitchell was arrested in March 2023 by police in Florida for marijuana possession after a traffic stop in which Mitchell evaded police at more than 140 miles per hour. Mitchell was suspended by then-coach Nick Saban shortly after the arrest. Mitchell pleaded no contest to his legal charge, receiving probation and community service. Mitchell was reinstated by Saban last summer.
Mitchell becomes the fourth of Alabama’s scholarship transfer portal departures this spring. The transfer portal closes for undergraduate players Tuesday night and for graduate players Wednesday night.
Mitchell entering the portal comes a day after Charlotte safety Kameron Howard committed to Alabama through the transfer portal, then freshman safety Peyton Woodyard entered the portal hours later.
It appears that one could expect a pitching duel when Alabama goes to Auburn this weekend in the final regular season of Southeastern Conference softball. That’s because neither team is much at hitting.
Alabama is 11th in the 13-team SEC in hitting with a .257 team batting average, while Auburn is nipping at the heels of Bama in 12th at .252. Auburn has one more home run than Alabama, 38-37, but the Tide has more doubles (42-32) and triples (8-6) and a higher slugging percentage, .410-.404. Both teams have a .362 on-base percentage.
Alabama (32-14 overall and 9-12 in conference play) and Auburn (25-17-1, 7-14) will meet on the Jane B. Moore Field (she was Mal Moore’s aunt, a longtime professor at Auburn) at 7 p.m. CDT Thursday (ESPNU), 5 p.m. Friday (SEC Network), and 11 a.m. Saturday SEC Network).
