Ahead of taking the podium at SEC Media Days in Dallas on Thursday, Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze joked about being mad at Will Redmond, Auburn’s GM of player of personnel.
“We’ve had a little lull in recruiting,” Freeze said of Auburn’s 2025 recruiting class. “I’m playing, but I did send him a text and said, ‘What’s the deal, man? Let’s pick this up.’”
Two days later, Tyler Lockhart, a 4-star linebacker out of Mississippi, also backed off his pledge.
During the Fourth of July holiday, 3-star tight end Hollis Davidson III rejoined Auburn’s 2025 class, followed by the commitment of 3-star offensive lineman Jacobe Ward.
Since then, however, there’s been nothing but radio silence on Auburn’s recruiting front — something Freeze expects to change this coming weekend as Auburn hosts its annual “Big Cat Weekend” recruiting event.
“We had really good momentum, then as recruiting does, you have a little lull it seems,” Freeze said. “But I expect it to pick back up with Big Cat.”
Scheduled for July 27, Big Cat Weekend is Auburn’s premier recruiting event and has been a mainstay of the Tigers’ offseason since its inception under former head coach Gene Chizik.
And with his eyes on a top-five recruiting class for the 2025 cycle, Freeze is hoping for similar success as he and the Tigers currently hold the 15th-ranked class, according to 247Sports.
“We’re never out of the fight on the guys we want, I don’t believe that,” Freeze said Thursday. “We’re not going to win every battle, but we’re on the right ones, and I do think, Big Cat, hopefully we get, we persuade a few more to come with us next weekend.”
