Browns reportedly hire second college coach

College offensive coordinator Nick Charlton will reportedly join Kevin Stefanski’s HC staff as an offensive assistant/playmaking specialist.

The Cleveland Browns’ coaching staff has reportedly strengthened its roster once again following reports that the club is hiring Nick Charlton as an offensive assistant and running game specialist.

Charlton comes to Cleveland after spending two seasons as the offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach on head coach Jim Mora’s staff at the University of Connecticut.

The plan to hire Charlton was first reported by ESPN’s Pete Thamel. In his first season with the Huskies, Charlton averaged 191 yards per game, ranking 33rd in the nation, and helped the team win a bowl game.

In his two years at UCLA, Charlton averaged 302.9 yards and 19.38 points per game. Charlton, 35, also has head coaching experience, leading the University of Maine from 2019 to 2021.

Being close in age to the players and bringing a different background to the coaching role has helped Charlton build relationships with former college players, such as former Maine first-team defensive lineman Keon Whittaker. It was useful.

It remains to be seen whether this translates into the professional game, but Charlton is still close in age to the players, which could help him build relationships with the attacking team.

Charlton is the latest college coach to join head coach Kevin Stefanski’s offensive staff after hiring former University of Alabama offensive coordinator Tommy Reese as tight ends coach and pass playmaking specialist.

Stefanski also announced that offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey, running backs coach Deuce Staley and offensive line coach Added Andy Dickerson to the staff. In Cleveland, Charlton averaged 118.6 yards per game and would help control games despite playing nearly six quarters of football without running back Nick Chubb.
