Derby County Keen on signing departing Barnsley Star

Derby County are reportedly eyeing a move for Barnsley midfielder Herbie Kane this summer.

According to Alan Nixon’s Patreon, midfielder Herbie Kane will be leaving Barnsley once his contract expires this summer and Derby County may soon open talks to bring the 25-year-old to Pride Park.

Over 47 appearances in all competitions for the Tykes this campaign, the former Liverpool youngster registered 10 goals alongside five assists. Barnsley’s failure to achieve promotion, however, seems to have signalled an end to his stay at the club.

A key addition?

Derby County are seriously in need of midfield additions with the aforementioned departures of Bird and Adams adding to a number of their current midfielders possibly seeing their deals expire.

The Rams are yet to announce their retained list, but with Liam Thompson, Conor Hourihane and Korey Smith all out of contract it could signal a major shakeup in that department.

It is important that Warne and co make quality additions ahead of their return to the second tier. Players the right side of 30 wouldn’t go amiss either, so Kane fits the bill.

Having been with the Tykes since 2020, including a season on loan with Oxford United, the former England U17 international has racked up 160 appearances. He has totalled 14 goals and 18 assists since his Oakwell switch for Barnsley and Oxford combined.

Derby County may now be out of their financial turmoil, and they may now spend as they wish within reason. That said, the Rams are still expected to be shrewd with their business and picking up a player of Kane’s quality on a free transfer could prove to be a very smart move.

Kane’s career so far

Having begun his youth career with Bristol City, he became part of Liverpool’s academy in 2013 and made his first team debut for the Reds in 2019 against MK Dons in the EFL Cup. One more appearance for Jurgen Klopp’s side followed, also in the EFL Cup against Aston Villa, before he spent a short loan spell with Hull City.

Barnsley then struck a deal to sign the Englishman for £1.25m, beating the likes of Hull, Luton Town and Portsmouth to his signature.

He spent the 2021/22 campaign on loan with Oxford United whilst the Tykes were in the Championship, and returned to Barnsley the following season where he has been a key member of the squad ever since.
