DONE: Aston Villa reach all agreement so sign star midfielder as medical booked

BirminghamLive has the latest Aston Villa transfer news, with the club agreeing a deal with free agent Youri Tielemans after his departure from Leicester City was confirmed this summer.

Youri Tielemans has signed for Aston Villa, with the midfielder ready to leave Leicester City on a free transfer.

After his contract with Leicester City expires on July 1, he will become an official Villa player. Tielemans played in the Premier League for four and a half years with Leicester, establishing himself as one of their greatest players as they won the FA Cup, Community Shield, and played in Europe. Villa qualifying for European football was most likely a major factor in enticing the midfielder to sign.

The signing is an impressive one for Villa, who reportedly faced competition from the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool, Roma and AC Milan for his signature. The midfielder will bring leadership qualities too, having captained Leicester on numerous occasions.

During Leicester’s disastrous relegation struggle under former Villa manager Dean Smith, the manager highlighted Tielemans’ personality traits. “I’m completely comfortable with his commitment,” he explained. “I’ve only seen a committed player in and around the training ground and on the field.”

“You have to remember that in our first game against Manchester City, he was coming back from an injury that had kept him out for five or six weeks, but he was determined to play that game to get himself up to speed as quickly as possible.” He’s still catching up, but he possesses attributes that we require in our team.

“I’m very good at reading people, and as soon as I met Youri, I knew football was important to him.” I looked him in the eyes, and he knows how much it meant to me.”

The Belgian played 195 times for Leicester in all competitions, receiving the club’s player of the season award in 2020-21.
